Beds Of Hay

The weight of a little one
Would scarcely dent such a bed
Yet the homeless, the dispossessed
Have nowhere to lay their heads
But beds of hay.

We know of a time
When God himself came small
And lay new-born in a stall.
Today
Near and far
The destitute ghosts walk -
Their eyes like lamps that
Probe the souls
Of us who turn away.

'Can’t you see us
On these beds of hay?'
'Can’t you see him?'
They say.

In our Diocese many have given of their time and energy to make Christ present to the homeless. The Morning Star, Regina Coeli, Centenary House, The Welcome Centre, Rosemount House, Stella Maris, Springwell, The Ormeau Centre, Dympna House are some of the many organisations who have been witnesses to those without a home this Christmas. Today we share a reflection from Ann Murray's book Travelling Light A book of days.
